Give your budding Ocean Explorers the skills they need to stay safe, capable and curious in dynamic aquatic environments!
This programme has been designed especially for young explorers aged 8-14 years old and will be held in St Helens, Tasmania, over two consecutive weeks.
It's a fun, engaging and jam-packed programme specifically designed to give adventurous kids confidence and skills in changing ocean environments.
We base all our teaching around interactive, stimulating games and exercises that keep everyone interested, motivated and safe.
The Ocean Explorers program is specially tailored to ensure little legends learn in a fun, engaging and safe environment.
Your child will take away solid foundation skills in Aquatic Resilience, Panic and Fear management, remaining Calm Under Pressure (both in and out of the water!), CO2 tolerance and the urges to breathe, the use of specific breathing patterns, practical anatomy and physiology, first aid and rescue, ocean buddy systems, mindfulness and positive mental anchors...and so much more!
This is programme designed to set kids up for success- not only in the ocean, but also in life!
Course Overview
Our aim in the Ocean Explorers Programme is to give students the understanding of why we do things and how the body reacts to certain situations and to instil confidence and self-belief.
Therefore, we begin with a half day of fun (dry) theory and skills aquisition.
This is followed by fun, challenging and realistic confined-water training which is tailored to individual experience and local beach conditions.
Practical training covers areas such as:

How much does it cost?
This is a 2 x FULL Day programme, costing $215 (plus GST) per child for the whole course.

WHERE WILL IT BE HELD?
The exact location of will be weather dependent, however, our starting point for Day 1 will be in St Helens for a short education session.
The afternoon practical sessions will be in the ocean. Day 2 will be all practical, likely beginning at Burns Bay, at the end of St Helens Pt Road.
Will parents be involved?
Each child will need to be accompanied by a capable and responsible adult for Day 1 (it's fine if you have more than one child, but only one parent - please discuss with us beforehand!!).
Parents will be expected to get involved with all the activities as this is a shared learning experience for everyone!
How long is each session & what will we learn?
Each session builds upon the last, focusing on key objectives and outcomes, including fostering enjoyment, positivity, and safety, learning emotional control and fear response management through nervous system and breathing regulation, mastering safe practices for ocean environments, such as Safe/No Safe Zone identification, How To Help A Friend protocols, and recognising water movement patterns and Safe Adventure principles, instilling a mindset that embraces challenges and aspires to achieve, and ultimately, nurturing resilience and confidence in water-related activities.
What equipment will we need?
Each child will need to have a wetsuit to keep them warm (preferably with a hood!) and a snorkel mask or goggles.
Everyone will also need to bring: swimmers, a water bottle, a towel, warm clothing and any water craft they would usually use at the beach!
Who are our instructors?
This programme is being coordinated by The Resilience Lab's Managing Director, Nathan Burns. Nath is a water-mad surfer, spearfisherman and body surfer who's currently in the process of helping his young daughter become a mermaid! He is a Registered Paramedic (working in metro, rural and austere settings for more over 15 years), and has spent the majority of his adult life on the road and in the outdoors- either travelling, guiding expeditions or working in Outdoor Education.
He has led countless wilderness and medical trips to far-flung places like Nepal, Japan, Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea.
He has a deep interest in the physiology, psychology and dynamics of teamwork and leadership and is always looking for ways to further his understanding in this area.
He is slowly trying to master the intricacies of woodworking, is a life-long surfer, a coffee-nut and a doting father/husband.
